If you like looking at stupid things on the internet, you’ve probably already met him but didn’t know his name. This is Danbo, a kid in a cardboard box robot costume from the manga and anime Yotsuba&!, and like Domo-kun before him, he has a bit of traction in image meme format. He’s another weird Japanese mascot that has Western attention without much understanding of why, and like Alphaville, he’s big in Japan.

I went to CES earlier this month and found a booth made by a company called Cheero. They’re a Japanese smartphone accessory manufacturer, and they love Danbo. They had a larger-than-life-sized Danbo at their booth, and were showing off everything from Danbo toys to Danbo USB cables. They gave me some so I could get a better understanding of just what Danbo is.

The most toy-like product wasn’t by Cheero (though it was a Cheero-branded variant), but by Japanese toy company Kaiyodo. Kaiyodo makes Revoltech, a highly posable action figure line that’s up there with Figma and SH Figuarts. Danbo is actually a mini Revoltech figure, though there are bigger versions — along with one of Yotsuba herself — from the anime and manga. It’s cute, little, box-shaped, and lets you make so many dumb memes. So, of course, I did. Watch the video for them.

The battery and USB cable are Danbo-head-shaped and have Danbo’s face, which at this point has become its own logo. It’s two circles and a triangle. They’re pretty typical smartphone accessories, though Danbo’s eyes on the USB cable light up when something is plugged in, and glow creepy red when it’s just plugged into a USB power source. The battery pack’s eyes sadly don’t light up, but it holds a whopping 10,4000 mAh. It’s all stuff you can find online and Japan, and maybe after this CES in some more stylish, geeky, and outright-weeaboo electronics and toy stores.
